Healthy Monsoon Breakfast Ideas to Start Your Day Right

Aug 01, 2026Bharat Vedica

Rainy mornings, a cup of chai, and a fried treat may seem like the perfect combination, but is it the healthiest way to begin your day?

While the monsoon brings much-needed sense of relief from the summer heat, it also calls for a more mindful approach to everyday eating. The changing weather and high humidity can slow digestion, making heavy, greasy breakfasts feel less satisfying and harder to digest. This is why traditional Indian kitchens have long favoured warm, freshly prepared meals made with wholesome grains, seasonal vegetables, nourishing spices, and natural ingredients that offer both comfort and nourishment.

A balanced breakfast not only fuels your morning but also forms the tone for the rest of the day. Whether you enjoy millet porridge, vegetable chilla, or whole wheat pancakes drizzled with raw honey, choosing seasonal ingredients can make your meals both comforting and satisfying.

Here are seven healthy monsoon breakfast recipes to help you start your day right.

Why Your Breakfast Matters During the Monsoon

A nourishing breakfast becomes even more important during the rainy season, when changing weather and increased humidity can influence appetite and digestion. Choosing warm, freshly prepared meals made with wholesome ingredients helps you begin the day feeling comfortable, energised, and satisfied. Here are a few reasons to pay closer attention to your morning meal during the monsoon:

  • Supports comfortable digestion: Warm, freshly cooked breakfasts are often easier to digest than heavy, greasy, or refrigerated foods during damp weather.
  • Provides steady nourishment: Whole grains, pulses, seasonal vegetables, and healthy fats create a balanced meal that helps keep you satisfied throughout the morning.
  • Celebrates seasonal ingredients: Traditional spices such as ginger, turmeric, cumin, black pepper, and garlic have long been valued in Indian kitchens for adding warmth, flavour, and depth to monsoon cooking.
  • Encourages mindful eating: Freshly prepared meals are generally preferred over highly processed foods or leftovers during the rainy season, when maintaining good food hygiene becomes especially important.
  • Brings warmth and comfort: A wholesome breakfast can be a simple way to embrace the season while enjoying familiar flavours that have been part of traditional Indian kitchens for generations.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup soaked yellow moong dal

  • 1 green chilli

  • 1 inch ginger

  • ¼ tsp turmeric

  • Salt

  • Finely chopped onion

  • Grated carrot

  • Coriander leaves

  • A2 Gir Cow Ghee

Method

Rinse the soaked organic moong dal thoroughly and blend it with the ginger, green chilli, turmeric, salt, and a little water until smooth. Transfer the batter to a bowl and gently mix with finely chopped onion, grated carrot, and coriander leaves. The vegetables add freshness, colour, and texture while making the chilla more wholesome.

Prepare the mint chutney by blending the mint leaves, coriander, curd, roasted cumin, lemon juice, and Pink salt until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Heat a non-stick or cast-iron pan over a medium flame and lightly grease it with A2 Gir Cow Ghee. Pour a ladleful of batter onto the centre of the pan and spread it into a thin, even circle. Cook until the underside turns golden and crisp, then flip and cook the other side until lightly browned.

Serve the hot vegetable moong dal chilla with the chilled mint chutney for a nourishing monsoon breakfast that is light, satisfying, and full of flavour.

Tip: Cook the chilla over a medium flame for an even golden crust while keeping the inside soft. Pair it with a cup of warm ginger tea for a comforting start to a rainy morning.

2. Foxtail Millet Vegetable Porridge

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Organic Foxtail Millet
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp A2 Gir Cow Ghee
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
  • 1 cup finely chopped seasonal vegetables (carrot, beans, peas, or vegetables of your choice)
  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish

Method

Rinse the Organic Foxtail Millet thoroughly under running water and cook it with water until soft and creamy. While the millet is cooking, heat the A2 Gir Ghee in a pan and sauté the grated ginger until fragrant. Add the chopped vegetables and cook for 4–5 minutes until they are tender yet retain a slight crunch.

Add the cooked millet to the vegetables, season with freshly ground organic black pepper and salt, then stir everything together. Simmer for another 2–3 minutes so the flavors blend beautifully, and the porridge reaches a smooth, comforting consistency.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve warm as a nourishing breakfast that's gentle on the stomach and perfect for cool, rainy mornings.

Tip: Finish with an extra spoonful of  A2 Gir Cow Ghee before serving for added richness and flavour.

3. Khapli Wheat Vegetable Upma

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Organic Khapli Wheat, cracked
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, finely chopped
  • ½ cup green beans, finely chopped

  • 8–10 fresh curry leaves
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
  • 1½ tbsp A2 Gir Cow Ghee
  • Salt, to taste
  • Water, as required
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish
  • 2 tbsp roasted peanuts for added crunch

Method

Heat A2 Cow Ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan and lightly roast the cracked organic Khapli wheat until it releases a pleasant nutty aroma. Remove and set aside.

In the same pan, prepare the tempering by adding organic mustard seeds, curry leaves, and grated ginger. Once fragrant, add the chopped onion, carrot, and beans, and sauté until the vegetables begin to soften.

Add the roasted Khapli wheat back to the pan, pour in the required amount of water, season with salt, and cook over a low flame until the wheat becomes soft and absorbs the liquid. Fluff gently before serving.

Tip: Add a handful of roasted peanuts just before serving for extra crunch and texture.

Heat a lightly greased pan over a medium flame and pour small portions of the batter onto the pan. Cook until bubbles appear on the surface, then flip and cook until both sides are evenly golden.

Transfer the pancakes to a serving plate and allow them to cool slightly before drizzling generously with Raw Forest Honey. Serve with fresh fruits for a wholesome monsoon breakfast.

Tip: Never heat raw honey directly. Add it just before serving to preserve its natural flavour and character.

  • 2 tablespoons Raw Honey

Method

Finish with a generous drizzle of Raw Honey, allowing its natural sweetness to complement the fresh fruits without overpowering their flavour.

Serve immediately as a refreshing breakfast that's both wholesome and naturally satisfying.

Tip: You can also try Saffron Honey or Rose Petal Honey for a delicate floral sweetness that pairs beautifully with seasonal fruits.

Fold in the softened organic millet flakes and mix gently so the vegetables and spices are evenly combined. Cook for another 2–3 minutes before finishing with fresh lemon juice and chopped coriander leaves.
